Hormone imbalance is not one condition but a general name for hormone changes that can surface as fatigue, low libido, mood changes, sleep disruption, weight shifts, or other symptoms. The only reliable way to know whether hormones are actually driving what you feel is targeted, appropriately timed testing interpreted together with your history. At Zest Regen Health in Columbia, Maryland, our clinical team evaluates these symptoms in both men and women, and treatment is never discussed before the testing says something.
What are the common signs in men?
For men, the symptoms that most often lead to a hormone evaluation are changes in sexual function, energy, mood, and body composition. Per Endocrine Society guidance, low testosterone is diagnosed only when symptoms and signs are present together with consistently low morning blood levels, so symptoms alone are not a diagnosis.
- Reduced sex drive or erectile concerns
- Persistent fatigue and reduced endurance or motivation
- Depressed mood, irritability, or brain fog
- Loss of muscle mass or strength and increased body fat
- Reduced body or facial hair
- Hot flushes or sweats in some cases
What are the common signs in women?
For women, the transition through perimenopause and menopause brings the most common hormone-related symptoms: hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption, mood changes, irregular or heavier periods, and changes in libido. ACOG and the North American Menopause Society note that menopause is primarily diagnosed by age, symptom pattern, and menstrual history, and that routine hormone levels are generally not needed to start menopausal hormone therapy. Testing is still valuable when the history points to other contributors, such as thyroid or metabolic changes.
Why symptoms alone are not enough
Fatigue, mood, weight, and sleep symptoms are shared with thyroid problems, stress, poor sleep, vitamin deficiencies, and normal aging. Treating the wrong cause does not help and can cause harm, which is why a responsible evaluation starts with history and then tests what the history points to, rather than attaching a prescription to every symptom.
What appropriate testing includes
| Who | What is usually evaluated | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Men, initial | Morning total testosterone, repeated on a second occasion; free testosterone when indicated | Confirms whether levels are truly and consistently low |
| Men, before and during therapy | PSA and hematocrit as clinically indicated; hematocrit rechecked at 3 to 6 months and annually | Baseline safety, then monitoring while on treatment |
| Women | Symptom and menstrual history; thyroid and metabolic panels when indicated | Most menopausal symptoms are diagnosed by pattern; testing rules out other causes |
| Both | LH/FSH and other markers as the history suggests | Distinguishes the cause and guides the right approach |
How hormone evaluation works at Zest Regen Health
Hormone care at Zest Regen Health is lab-based and physician-guided. Testing is drawn at the Columbia, Maryland clinic, timed appropriately (for men, morning samples; for women, planned around cycle where relevant), and interpreted together with your history before any treatment is proposed. If testing shows a thyroid, nutrient, or metabolic driver instead of a hormone problem, our clinical team says so plainly and points you to the right care.
